Southlake Regional Health Centre held an official ground-breaking ceremony this morning to celebrate a new 10-bed regional residential hospice being built on Queen Street in Newmarket, Ontario. The Margaret Bahen Hospice for York Region will offer a comfortable, home-like environment for patients who are in the final stages of a terminal illness. When completed in late 2017, the hospice will serve about 250 patients and their families from York Region and surrounding areas, each year. Read more...

This year, 365 more adult and pediatric patients will receive advanced ophthalmology care closer to home at Southlake Regional Health Centre, through new provincial funding. To help meet the growing demand in the region, the Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) has provided Southlake's Eye Institute with $357,695 to perform 110 glaucoma and 255 strabismus surgeries. Read more...

Oct 25, 2016 Quality Care Close to Home for Residents of Vaughan - Ontario Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital

On October 25, 2016, construction began on a new hospital - the first in the city of Vaughan - that will provide advanced health care services to more than 500,000 people. Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will help patients by providing modern surgical services and operating rooms, advanced diagnostic imaging and other specialized services. The hospital will have 342 beds on opening day. The majority of rooms for patients in acute care will be private. Read more...

Today, Ontario reintroduced the Patients First Act, 2016 that would, if passed, improve access to health care for patients and their families. The proposed legislation would increase access to care with better coordination and continuity, and bring a greater focus on culturally and linguistically appropriate services.

Aug 22, 2016 Ontario Funding New Palliative Care Hub in Alliston

Ontario is committing to invest up to $1.05 million annually in Matthews House Hospice, once construction of its new 10-bed care hospice is completed.

The province will provide annual funding for four existing hospice beds beginning this year and funding for six additional beds will be provided once construction on the expanded hospice is complete in spring 2018.

The LHIN Community Engagement Guidelines (June 2016) were collaboratively developed through the Community Engagement Task Group. The document outlines the expectations regarding community engagement and provides guiding principles to assist Health Service Providers in their community engagement activities. Jul 20, 2016 Ontario Investing An Additional $13.7 million in Home and Community Care in our Central LHIN

The Ontario government is investing approximately $13.7 million in the Central LHIN/CCAC this year, to enhance support for home care clients with high needs and their caregivers.  The Central LHIN serves York Region and surrounding areas of the GTA.

Province-wide this investment will help clients and caregivers most in need, including $80 million for enhanced home care and $20 million for caregiver respite.

Warren Jestin, Chair of the Central LHIN Board of Directors, presented the annual Chairman's Award on behalf of the Board on June 28. Recipients of this award are recognized annually for their contributions to projects which have improved the health care system and the patient experience by demonstrating the spirit of the award – Innovation through Collaboration. The two projects selected to receive the 2016 Award were the Palliative Care Crisis Line project and the Ontario Telemedicine initiative.

Oct 18, 2015 New Humber River Hospital Now Open: Inpatients have been moved from 3 legacy sites

A new era in healthcare in Ontario began with the opening of the new Humber River Hospital today, Sunday, October 18, 2015 at 6:00 a.m. The new hospital is the first fully digital hospital in North America, with some of the latest technology available today integrated throughout to support excellence in care. At 1.8 million square feet, it took 43 months to build. Note: The Urgent Care Centre that is mentioned in the media release closed in July 2016.

Dr. Jeremy Theal, a gastroenterologist and the Chief Medical Information Officer at North York General Hospital in Toronto, was honoured today with the Minister’s Medal Honouring Excellence in Health Quality and Safety. Dr. Theal won the medal in the Individual Champion category for his leadership on the eCare project. This medical record transformation project replaces manual paper systems with advanced digital tools to improve the quality and safety of patient care.
